San Diego County Fair Opens Today!

san diego county fair del marIt’s that time of year, San Diego! The San Diego County Fair (known to some forever by its former name, the Del Mar Fair) opens today, and you know what that means!  Gustatory challenges of all kinds – Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joes, lobster nachos, bacon cotton candy and this year’s special offering: deep-fried chocolate chip cookie batter.  But of course the typical San Diego County Fair games, rides and exhibits will be around as well.  Check out the prize-winning livestock and the prize-winning garden exhibits (my personal favorite!), and take a stroll through Bing Crosby Hall to see every new knickknack and device you never knew you needed!

This year’s theme is “Game On,” celebrating classic games of all kinds: pinball, board games, computer and video games, and more.  There will be game tournaments and life-size versions of chess, dominoes and other gaming favorites.

San Diego County Fair admission for adults is $14; $8 for children ages 6-12 and seniors 62 and over; and children under 6 get in free!

San Diego County Fair parking is always a melee, so take advantage of the free off-site parking lots and free shuttles to the fair!  Off-site lots are located at the Del Mar Horsepark, 14550 El Camino Real; the MiraCosta College campus in Cardiff by the Sea, 3333 Manchester Ave.; and Torrey Pines High School, 3710 Del Mar Heights Road.  Buses leave these areas every 15-20 minutes.

Have fun, San Diego!  Go while you can – the festivities end on July 4th, with a renowned fireworks show!
